Gymnastics: Scotch Plains-Fanwood and Edison’s Zampella win North 2 section titles


Tamyra Singletary won two events to lead Scotch Plains-Fanwood, No.6 in the NJ.com Top 10, to the team title, while Edison’s Haley Zampella took all-around honors at NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2 Championships at St Thomas Aquinas in Edison.

Singletary, who finished third in the all-around, won the beam with a 9.3 and had the highest score on floor with a 9.525 to lead his team to 108.775 points and a narrow margin of victory over No.8 Westfield, who finished second with 108.375.

Host St. Thomas Aquinas was third at 106.85.

Shay Farley was also a key contributor for Scotch Plains-Fanwood, finishing seventh in the all-around at 36.05 after finishing second on floor at 9.5 and fourth on bars at 9.05.

Zampella totaled 37.875 to win all-around honors, while Old Bridge’s Amanda Scheuerman was second at 37.4. Singleton was just behind at 37.175.

Zampella won the vault with 9.75, was second on beam with 9.275 and third on bars (9.4) and floor (9.45)

Scheuerman won the bars with 9.725 and was second on beam with 9.275.

In the lead for Westfield, Jessica D’Agosta and Shannon Gibbs, who tied for fifth in the all-around at 36.2.

The top team from each section and the remaining five teams with the highest team scores from all section results combined will advance to the State Team Championships next Thursday at The Brick Memorial. All teams tied for the lowest qualifying position also advance.

Individuals in the top five places in each event and the all-around in each section will advance to the State Individual Championships next Saturday at the Brick Memorial. All individuals scoring 36 or more in the all-around competition are also eligible.
